Bicycle

The bicycle is a mechanical VEHICLE created by humans. We ride a bicycle similarly to how we ride a HORSE, but in this case, it is consciousness rather than unconsciousness that propels us forward.

What is distinctive about the bicycle, compared to other vehicles, is that we move by our own muscular power and maintain our balance. We can only sustain balance by moving forward, which suggests notions of inner and outer development. Additionally, one always travels alone on a bicycle, indicating an individual path.

Unlike with a car, a cyclist can almost entirely choose his own route; we are not bound to specific tracks. When cycling, we are also more aware and present than if we were in a car or other “box” (like a train). No vehicle implies freedom as much as the bicycle, as we have no constraints (rails, roads, driver, etc.). Also, in contrast to other vehicles, the bicycle leaves nature mostly unaffected—it leaves almost no trace.

Falling off a bicycle can indicate a lack of balance; getting a flat tire suggests failing to reach one’s goal, and so on.
