Bridge

The bridge is a symbol of transition from one state to another—it connects opposites. This transition often implies danger in myths and legends, much like initiation in general. The bridge can be seen as a "vertical ladder."*

In dreams, a bridge may represent psychological transformation or reflect changes in personal or professional life.

A bridge is a human-made structure, such as one built over a river, and in this sense, it symbolizes a conscious way of moving from one psychological point to another. The ferryman holds a similar meaning but operates "autonomously" and may need to be persuaded or paid. Often, the construction of a bridge or crossing involves some form of sacrifice, perhaps because it is an "unnatural" (consciously built) structure over a natural (unconscious) obstacle.

Both the rainbow and the Milky Way have been perceived as bridges between worlds, and shamans are believed to have access to a "bridge" between realms.

It is a universal belief that the bridge to the other side is very narrow and that sinners risk falling off as they cross. The Dictionary of Symbols describes it this way: "The bridge places men and women on a narrow path where they face the inevitable obligation to make a choice—one that may lead to salvation or damnation."
