Depression

Depression is a state devoid of energy. (Compare with Boredom.) If a dream figure is depressed, one might assume that what it represents lacks energy—perhaps because it is something old, something we’ve left behind, overlooked, or for some other reason has been drained of its vitality.

Stagnation, boredom, and depression are often prerequisites for something significant to occur, or for new content to break through; they act like a dam against the unconscious, accumulating force until it can break through. The creative work that follows is usually deeper and more authentic to the artist, for instance. A depressive state can thus be a precondition for something positive to happen.
