Wrestling

Wrestling signifies a struggle or conflict of some kind. However, wrestling is distinct from other forms of combat due to its physical and intimate nature. Two individuals in a wrestling match almost embrace each other, using the entire body’s muscles to grapple and overpower the opponent, skin against skin.

Wrestling has been a fertility ritual across various cultures; the energy of the struggle was likely believed to encourage growth and vegetation. It is possible that Jacob’s wrestling with an angel in Genesis (32:24) could be interpreted within this context. However, in ritualistic settings, wrestling has often mirrored an imagined conflict between good and evil, order and chaos, and so on.
