Drowning

To be underwater, to drown, can be an image of sinking into the overwhelming unconscious. Dreams of this kind may involve inflation or some form of obsession, or other forms of domination. Compare with boat, for if the boat or the method, or even the way of orienting oneself does not work, there is a risk of drowning—this represents a kind of disorientation.

Helplessly sinking into the sea is not necessarily the end, but may illustrate, for example, that the Self, the soul, and/or the transcendent function emerges in a way that can be experienced as frightening.

The King

It is a common theme that the dying king, the prevailing attitude whose death is necessary for the new attitude, is associated with water and drowning.

Dissolution and Renewal

Drowning, like submersion in water and disappearance, serves as an image of dissolution (the alchemical solutio). It can carry a strongly negative connotation but can also be positive. The “static” personality must, in a sense, dissolve in order to renew itself. (Cf. Tears.) This dissolution of the ego (perhaps in the Self) is, of course, frightening and overwhelming.

Baptism

Baptism (cf.), as submersion in and emerging from water as a new, redeemed person, symbolizes drowning, dissolution, and resurrection.

Overwhelmed

However, drowning can also have a more down-to-earth meaning, simply indicating that one has “taken on more than one can handle” or is overwhelmed by something one cannot control. One might say, for example, that one is “drowning in work.” For instance, if things are happening in life that one cannot cope with, one may dream of drowning and/or flooding.
