Crocodile

The crocodile is an ancient, monstrous creature that has been associated with rain and, more broadly, considered a weather deity. It is also linked to the moon and darkness, the underworld, and death, but also rebirth. Primarily, it is seen as a devouring and greedy monster in Western imagination.

The crocodile shares much symbolic meaning with the dragon and, as a cold-blooded "chthonic" creature, also with the serpent, especially in contemporary dreams. However, it generally has a more negative connotation than the dragon (which can also be good and intelligent). As a reptile, it belongs to the lower regions of the psyche.

The crocodile inhabits both water and land; it rises from the depths to consume what walks on the shore. Its similarities to dinosaurs and dragons give it an association with darkness, mystery, death, and initiation.
