Decay

In alchemy, putrefactio, or decay, is an extension of mortificatio, death, and inherits its symbolic value but takes it a step further. It is an unpleasant yet necessary state in the process. Paracelsus writes:

“Putrefaction has such potency that it eradicates the old nature and transforms everything into a new nature, bearing a new and different fruit. All that lives dies, all that is dead decays, and then all that is dead receives new life.” (Quoted in Edinger 1994, p. 149.)
