Exam Dream

The theme of a dream where the dreamer must take an exam unprepared often relates to issues of persona. This reflects the fear of not living up to the role one plays or is expected to fulfill or the fear of being exposed as less knowledgeable than one's role or persona suggests.

There are many variations on this theme, such as the dreamer being surprised by a test, not finding the room where the test is being held, and so forth. However, the exam dream can also involve the dreamer having to give a lecture, answer questions at work, or virtually any situation where the dreamer feels he or her is being evaluated and might fall short. The discomfort stems from the fear of failing in a social role, of feeling like an imposter, or being afraid of exposure.

An exam dream might also serve as a metaphor for a life test the dreamer may be wise to prepare for, or it may reflect feelings of being judged, perhaps fearing "condemnation" in a particular type of situation.

Shadow Work – A Critical Commentary

When browsing public channels on various platforms that deal with Jungian psychology, one is struck by how frequently “shadow work” appears.  It seems to be mostly young men, who don’t appear to have studied Jung to any significant extent, who are fascinated by and encourage this "work." As someone who has studied Jung and Jungian literature for a long time, I don’t recognize this focus on so-called shadow work in the sources at all. It actually seems to be a modern internet phenomenon rather than something genuinely Jungian. Yes, it is of course true that the “shadow” is a central concept in Jungian psychology, and it is true that Jung stated that it is "a therapeutic necessity for the ego to confront its shadow" (CW 14, par. 514) – but this shadow work they speak of, where does it come from? We may note that Théoden’s army meets Éowyn at Dunharrow, an ancient fortress to which the people have fled under her leadership.
