Firearm

With a firearm, a mere press of the finger sets off a controlled explosion, followed by a projectile that speeds lethally in a specific direction with tremendous velocity. The fundamental purpose of this mechanical construction is to kill at a distance, potentially even without exposing the shooter to danger. This grants a disproportionate, almost god-like power to humans. They can kill effortlessly from afar, regardless of the shooter's own qualities (such as strength, courage, or intelligence).

Anyone carrying a firearm feels a sense of power and control. As a dream symbol, firearms likely represent this very feeling—the self’s ability to manage a perceived dangerous situation. If the weapon doesn’t function in the dream, the dreamer experiences a sense of powerlessness. This can indicate that the approach may not be suited to the psychological situation at hand.

Firearms offer humans a means of defending against threats that might otherwise be overwhelming, like multiple armed adversaries. In other contexts, however, carrying a firearm can be a disproportionate reaction to a threat.

Revolvers, cannons, and similar weapons use explosions to produce an effect. For this reason, firearms symbolize strong emotions; one is “loaded,” followed by a discharge likely resulting in destructive outcomes.

Shadow Work – A Critical Commentary

When browsing public channels on various platforms that deal with Jungian psychology, one is struck by how frequently “shadow work” appears.  It seems to be mostly young men, who don’t appear to have studied Jung to any significant extent, who are fascinated by and encourage this "work." As someone who has studied Jung and Jungian literature for a long time, I don’t recognize this focus on so-called shadow work in the sources at all. It actually seems to be a modern internet phenomenon rather than something genuinely Jungian. Yes, it is of course true that the “shadow” is a central concept in Jungian psychology, and it is true that Jung stated that it is "a therapeutic necessity for the ego to confront its shadow" (CW 14, par. 514) – but this shadow work they speak of, where does it come from? We may note that Théoden’s army meets Éowyn at Dunharrow, an ancient fortress to which the people have fled under her leadership. During supper, Merry asks about Aragorn and the Paths of the Dead, but no one—neither Théoden, Éomer or Éowyn—understands why he chose to take this hopeless road.
