Hallway

The hallway is the part of the house where we are prepared to admit strangers; it is where we receive guests and where we put on outerwear to leave our private sphere. Both host and guest change in the hallway, undergoing a transformation between the private and the public. In this way, more than any other room, the hallway symbolizes our more public self—the deliberate transition between the public and the private—if the house as a whole symbolizes our self.
