Pig

The pig, or more specifically the sow, has been associated with mother goddesses and fertility deities throughout the world, such as Isis, Demeter, and Freyja (whose epithet Sýr literally means "the sow"). Pigs were depicted on coins from Eleusis, and pigs were sacrificed in a pit during the Thesmophoria festival (which was exclusive to women and celebrated Demeter and Persephone). The pig has also attracted associations with lust, gluttony, and impurity – thus linked with sex and at times, the demonic (as in Lord of the Flies). On the other hand, it can symbolize simplicity and the earthly, which means that dreaming of pigs may express a need to get closer to such qualities.

It is a down-to-earth, utilitarian animal that has always been close to humans and tied to fertility. However, during the Christian era in Europe, it was often regarded as a dirty and "low" animal, frequently associated with indulgence. "Pig" is also, in many places, a harsh insult, and "pig" is used to describe self-centered and unpleasant people. At the same time, pigs, especially in children's books, are often portrayed as innocent, sensitive, and intelligent creatures – perhaps a remnant of the affection that rural families felt for their pigs. In some cultures, it is also linked to luck and seen as a positive symbol in dreams.
