Vehicle

The vehicle that the dreamer is traveling in often describes how he or she lives his or her life within the context of the dream, and where they are headed: Is the dreamer moving in an individual way or a collective way? Do the dreamer have the opportunity to influence the journey, or not? Is it the dreamer's own vehicle, or is it borrowed, or even stolen, and so on? (See also specific vehicles like Car, Bus, and Train.)

Types of Vehicles

Driving one’s own car typically means that one is in control of one's situation and journey. However, if one is a passenger on an airplane, one has no ability to influence direction, speed, and so forth; one is at the mercy of an unknown person (unconscious content, likely a complex). Traveling by train places the dreamer in a distinctly collective situation, while riding a bike in a dream allows for almost any route without needing to consider roads.

Walking

Walking, however, offers the greatest freedom and is our simplest and most fundamental way to get where we want to go, entirely under our own power. Sometimes the dream may indicate that vehicles are inadequate means to reach our personal goals, suggesting instead that we should wander. (Actually, dreams generally seem suspicious of mechanical means.) Dreams that emphasize walking can allude to our inner journey or encourage us to continue, "keep on walking."

Traveling

If one is traveling by train or boarding a ferry that sets out over water, it may indicate the beginning of a (possibly inner) journey.

Situation

The vehicle can also describe a situation, much like a house, pertaining to the inner dynamics involved. It could be a larger vehicle, such as a train where the dreamer walks around meeting old friends, or perhaps a cruise ship. Such dreams may refer to the "life journey" one is currently undertaking and what is happening along the way.
