Castle

More than anything else, castles and fortresses are majestic buildings erected for protection, perhaps the center of the world; the great structure that envelops the individual, thus serving as an expression of the Self. They share certain symbolism with houses, but on a "higher" level. It can be a symbol for something one wishes to achieve – the distant castle, the treasure hard to find, and so on.

Mother Symbol

The castle (and the fortress) is a mother symbol, a place where one can presumably live a good life, protected from the hostile world. Since it is deliberately constructed by humans, it carries a more “conscious” meaning than, for example, the forest, which is also associated with protection and motherhood.

Protection

A fortress and castle aim for defense. If one finds oneself in such a building, the dream may suggest that the content is related to one’s defense of something.

Fantasy

Most people likely have positive associations with castles, and it symbolically represents a "good" mother image. However, the symbol can also have negative qualities. For example, one can be a prisoner in a castle (just as one can be a prisoner in one's mother complex), which is a common motif in folk tales. Furthermore, the castle can be associated with “castles in the air,” a fantasy that lacks grounding in reality, a place one wishes to escape to in order to avoid reality.

The Self

The castle is, in many contexts, an image of the Self, particularly if it is an inner castle (as in Christian mysticism, for example with Teresa of Ávila), a golden castle, etc. The common fairy tale theme of being trapped in the castle can be interpreted as being unconsciously identified with the Self, meaning lacking a conscious relationship to it. (Redemption Motifs, p. 78.)

Spirituality

In many traditions, the castle symbolizes an “inner refuge,” a place where one meets their God, or even where God is present – "God is my stronghold" (Psalms 59:18). This analogy between the sacred castle and the divine is common, and in some ways, it aligns with the castle as the maternal protection. But just like the temple, the castle is also a recurring metaphor for the holy body in Eastern tradition (e.g., Bhagavad Gita, 5:13).

The common fairy tale motif of the hero suddenly arriving at a castle during their journey often represents a spiritual revelation, a manifestation of previously unknown value. The castle is also associated with the image of "the treasure that is difficult to find."
