Net

Nets capture. One can be caught in a net or use a net to catch something oneself. (See also Spider.)

One can be caught in the net of illusions, in a destiny, or simply in unfortunate circumstances (which may be a result of our unconscious complexes, forming a fate). The spider weaves its web and captures its prey, and as a dream image, it often illustrates a negative or unconscious fate. Frequently, one is the one who ensnares oneself in the web of one's own psychology.

However, one can also use the net to catch fish and pull them up from the sea of the unconscious. Jesus told the fishermen Simon and Andrew, who were casting a net, to follow him and become fishers of men instead. (Matthew 4:18–19.) Similar metaphors involving nets, fishing, and water are used by Jesus in other contexts as well.
