Place, Location

The location where the dream takes place is particularly important to notice. Consider, for example, the House and Room. The location reflects the psychological situation being addressed. Is it a familiar place or an unfamiliar one? This could indicate whether the situation is something one is relatively conscious of or unconscious about.  

To understand the symbolism of the location, you need to rely on your own associations, as always. You might close your eyes and "tune into" the place—what feelings, thoughts, or memories are connected to it? For instance, if you dream about a place you associate with personal failure, the dream likely deals with related complexes or corresponding psychological material; perhaps the current life situation resembles the historical one.  

In general, it is essential to engage your emotions when making associations. Cold observations like “it’s my old school” lead nowhere. Instead, one must include the feelings tied to the school and the associations it brings to mind.

Shadow Work – A Critical Commentary

When browsing public channels on various platforms that deal with Jungian psychology, one is struck by how frequently “shadow work” appears.  It seems to be mostly young men, who don’t appear to have studied Jung to any significant extent, who are fascinated by and encourage this "work." As someone who has studied Jung and Jungian literature for a long time, I don’t recognize this focus on so-called shadow work in the sources at all. It actually seems to be a modern internet phenomenon rather than something genuinely Jungian. We may note that Théoden’s army meets Éowyn at Dunharrow, an ancient fortress to which the people have fled under her leadership. During supper, Merry asks about Aragorn and the Paths of the Dead, but no one—neither Théoden, Éomer or Éowyn—understands why he chose to take this hopeless road.
