Rain
Rain symbolizes “the fertilizing principle.” It flows from the paternal sky to the maternal earth. It fertilizes, purifies, and/or heals; a symbol of the sacred marriage between heaven and earth (Zeus and Demeter, according to the Greeks). In the I Ching, it is particularly an expression of good fortune.
In its negative aspect, rain can lead to flooding (cf.).
Falling rain, like other forms of water, has a “dissolving” quality; it can be associated with “solution,” solutio—the solution to a problem, for instance.
Rain signifies relaxation, and one feels relieved and breathes freely after the rain—then the sun emerges again. When the rain “lets up,” tensions are released; it has similarities with crying and tears.
As weather, rain is associated with emotions and moods in dreams—“feelings from the heavens.” A rain-laden sky without rain can symbolize a situation where emotions have not been released. (Compare Landscape.)
