Scalping
Scalping is a form of flaying (cf.), but it more specifically refers to the appropriation of another's life principle or soul. For certain Native American tribes, the scalp symbolized a helper. Since scalping involves the flaying of the head, it is, so to speak, the symbolic value of the head that is being sought. This can be associated with identity, soul, and spirit. The one who takes another's scalp "becomes master of [the victim's] power."
