Attic, Loft
The attic can reflect what is happening in our minds but remains unconscious. We often say someone has “bats in the belfry” - in Sweden, "gnomes in the attic" - implying that not everything is right in their head.
If something happens in the attic, it may relate to neglected or forgotten aspects of ourselves. Like the basement, the attic can symbolize the unconscious, the repressed. These aspects may, in turn, be connected to family and its history.
The attic is also associated with spirit. In Swedish, the words for "attic" and "wind" are the same, vind; it is a space above that is open for the wind, the spirit.
