Company

The company we have in a dream illustrates which aspect of ourselves has influence over the situation; often, it is a shadow aspect. (See also Stranger.) For example, if the dreamer walks with an acquaintance associated with wisdom or, on the other hand, stupidity, he is under the influence of his own wisdom or their inability to understand, as the dream illustrates in that respect. This rule of thumb is particularly clear when observing how, in one scene, the dreamer is without company, only to have passive company in the next scene, and then the company is gone in the following one; it is only in the middle scene/situation that this aspect of his personality is essential. For instance, a person going through a divorce dreams of a flood and tries to save children from drowning. The children's connection to the flood suggests that this upheaval is related to the divorce, as opposed to overwhelming issues at work. On the other hand, if the same dreamer were to dream about facing a challenge at work in the company of a colleague, it would hardly be directly related to the divorce.

Note that the company in our dreams is often entirely passive—it just exists without doing anything. They are expressions of parts of our own personality, not active energies affecting the events.
