Square, Market

The market square is typically an open space in the center of a city, and can be an expression of the Self. In these regards, it shares symbolic value with places like the garden and the courtyard. In any case, it is the center of the situation, where everything flows to and from.

The square and other similar spaces are a kind of temenos, a "sacred place" where something is set to unfold, a place of transformation, perhaps a union of opposites, a meeting between the conscious and unconscious, etc.

Historically, the square has particularly symbolized a gathering, the center to which everyone moves and gathers, expressing the values of this symbol, such as the collective. In contemporary dreams, the square in this sense tends to be replaced by modern, commercial establishments like shopping malls.
