To see oneself in a dream or to witness a scene in which the dream ego does not participate can suggest a lack of involvement in what the dream reflects. Not being present in the dream could point to a deficiency in empathy or emotional warmth, possibly as a result of intellectualization—being distanced from the experience. This distancing may also pertain to time, meaning the dream illustrates a historical context in one’s life from a symbolic perspective. (See also Theater.)
