Thread

The thread bears symbolic similarities to the weaving and web. We speak of the "thread of life" as well as the "weave of life." Swedes use the phrase "red thread" to refer to the overarching narrative or connecting theme, and when we lose our context, we say we have "lost the thread." Finding "a thread to pull on" can help us move forward again.

When Edinger discusses Theseus and Ariadne in The Eternal Drama (p. 78), he states that the thread, at least in that context, symbolizes the "principle of relation"—that is, what makes it possible to establish relationships with someone or something. The thread connects and enables attachment.

A ball of yarn or a spool of thread could be imagined as embodying this symbolism in potential, while a knot in the thread can indicate that the situation has become tangled.
