Train
The train, as a machine, represents significant directed force and energy. It is a highly powerful means of transport and can symbolize strong inner forces, such as important decisions and desires, for example, when colliding trains illustrate a serious inner conflict.
Older trains, in particular, possess a certain monstrous quality—they chug, hiss, thunder forward with repeated whistles, like an unstoppable beast roaring through the countryside.
As a vehicle in which the dream ego travels, the train is a collective means of transportation. The dreamer moves in the same direction and at the same speed as everyone else, along a predetermined track, with little or no ability to influence the course. The dream may highlight the dreamer’s place in a collective context and his or her attitude toward it.
The tracks themselves are paths laid out by society that one is expected to follow. To cross railway tracks at risk is a common dream image, sometimes symbolizing an attempt to deviate from societal expectations or the predefined path. In that context, the approaching train might suggest collective, possibly relentless, expectations placed upon the dreamer.
Trains can also illustrate the dreamer’s sense of being unable to influence the direction his or her life has taken or serve as a setting for reflection on compulsive or habitual actions and decisions. The train’s power, tracks, and adherence to schedules carry a sense of inevitability.
At the same time, there is something romantic about the train, taking us somewhere else, toward another, perhaps unknown, destination. Sitting on a train can be contemplative, while a train speeding through the night has a certain mystery. It can symbolize longing, possibilities, and journeys.
Traveling by train is also an image of life’s journey, moving through stations toward the final destination. The dreamer cannot choose to stop this journey or halt time but can only go along with it (possibly within a collective current). This symbolism is emphasized by the fact that one can move between train cars, socialize, eat, sleep, and so on—essentially, live one’s life while the train continues on its way.
